OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Apps to Redefine Conversational AI Insights Desk, October 7, 2025 OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking update to ChatGPT, introducing a new generation of interactive apps that users can now chat with directly inside the platform. With this launch, OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT from a conversational AI into a dynamic app ecosystem, enabling users to access third-party tools seamlessly within their chats. The company has also released the Apps SDK (Software Development Kit) in preview, allowing developers to start building and testing these apps immediately. The SDK is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to ensure interoperability and contextual responsiveness across apps. ChatGPT’s new apps are designed to fit naturally into conversations. Users can discover them organically when the assistant suggests relevant apps, or by invoking them directly by name. Each app responds to natural language queries and can include interactive elements—such as maps, playlists, or design canvases—that users can manipulate directly within the chat interface. For users, this means a more context-aware, adaptive experience, where ChatGPT can proactively bring in tools to help with tasks like planning, learning, or creating. For developers, the Apps SDK offers a chance to reach ChatGPT’s massive end user base—now exceeding 800 million—and integrate their services into everyday conversations. At launch, apps will be accessible to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. A select group of pilot partners, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, are already available in supported markets and in English. OpenAI has confirmed that additional partners will join later this year, and access will expand to EU users soon. By the end of the year, OpenAI plans to begin accepting app submissions for review and publication. The company also intends to introduce monetization options, along with a dedicated app directory where users can browse and search for approved apps. The integration promises powerful, real-world use cases—such as asking Spotify to create playlists, Zillow to find homes, or Canva to turn outlines into slide decks—all within the chat. ChatGPT will prompt users to connect to apps securely, clarifying what data will be shared. With this launch, OpenAI positions ChatGPT as a central hub for conversational productivity, blending the intuitiveness of chat with the functionality of apps.
